When most homeowners decide to undertake a loft conversion, they often become excited by ideas concerning décor, flooring and furniture options. Heating is rarely on the initial list of factors that is taken into account. However, it is important to consider heating because the period during which the build is being carried out is a great time to assess whether you need to upgrade your current heating system.
Part of the Landmark Group, Landmark Heating comprises professional and reliable central heating engineers that specialise in central heating and bathroom solutions for loft conversions and home extensions. Using market-leading products from Worcester and Valliant, we ensure that all our work is carried out to the highest standard. We offer an extended manufacturer’s guarantee of up to 7 years as well as a guarantee on our workmanship for 2 years.
Dan has 4 years’ experience at Landmark Heating and we pulled him aside from his busy schedule for a few minutes to ask him some questions.
What is a normal day for you? Most days I travel across London to meet clients whose briefs can range from a simple boiler installation, to wanting to achieve constant uninterrupted water pressure and flow. When I’m back at my desk, you can find me preparing Landmark Heating proposals, making material orders, assigning the gas safe engineers to projects and fielding queries.
Describe how you would work with a client to meet their needs? At the first appointment, I will listen to what the client wants to achieve, take water readings and check the current boiler. It is important to find out what the water flow and pressure is to work out how a system will operate after the proposed extension has been carried out. I like to work closely with the client to ensure we deliver a tailored solution within the right time frame.
At what stage do you usually get involved in the loft conversion process? Our presence is dependent on what the client requires. The gas safe engineers can carry out some projects prior to the Landmark Lofts works beginning. For other projects, the gas safe engineers can be onsite from around day 7 installing pipe work in the loft room. At Landmark Heating, we pride ourselves on being able to liaise with Landmark Lofts' onsite team in order to achieve the optimum time for the Landmark heating installation to take place.
How closely do you work with the architects and build team? Having started out as a project coordinator at Landmark Lofts, I worked directly with the in-house architects and build team on numerous loft conversion projects. This meant that I was directly involved and understood every stage of the loft conversion process. As Operations Manager, I have the combined knowledge and experience required to understand all facets of the loft conversion process, including the roles of the architects and build team. We operate as one team, to ensure that we work according to the client’s proposal.
Could you give the estimated cost of replacing a boiler? Installing a combination boiler starts at £3750. Installing an unvented cylinder with system boiler starts at £6650. An external incoming water mains upgrade starts at £1950, and this involves decommissioning the existing 15mm lead pipe and upgrading it to either 28mm or 32mm MDPE polypipe. These works should increase both the water flow and pressure.
We recently spoke to John and Caroline in Kingston, who decided to undertake a loft conversion, and wanted a better pressure flow to their bathroom. They didn’t want their new kitchen destroyed in the process. Landmark Heating proposed a vertical hot water 250 litre cylinder with a 240 litre horizontal accumulator, to be run by their existing boiler. The 250 litre unvented cylinder would provide plenty of hot water and the 240 litre accumulator would regulate and provide a boost to both their water flow and pressure.
Delighted with the outcome, John says:
‘This has improved the pressure of the water throughout the whole house, which is amazing!’
Whether you’re interested in replacing an old boiler or want to upgrade your central heating system as part of other refurbishment works, Landmark Heating can put together a cost-effective quote to suit you. We will carry out a free-obligation site survey to assess your needs and send you a detailed proposal, outlining the cost breakdown for the works.
