When interior designer Ellie and chartered surveyor Matthew decided to move back to London after a three year spell in Dubai, they needed to find a new home and they settled upon a terraced three bedroom property in Croydon. However, the couple found the interior very dated, and the kitchen was particularly problematic. It was very small, and disconnected from the neighbouring dining room. With a generously sized garden, however, there was plenty of scope for a ground floor extension. The couple decided to bring their new home into the 21st century by transforming the rear of the property into a bright and spacious open-plan kitchen, dining and living area.
Ellie and her husband lived with her sister immediately after returning to the UK, where they spotted signage from several Landmark projects in the vicinity. When it was time to find a company to carry out their extension, they remembered us and got in touch. Despite also going to several other companies for quotes, they settled on Landmark based on the strength of our design consultant, Eddie, and our prompt quotation. Ellie’s mother also opted to go with Landmark.
Our architects worked closely with the couple to produce a design which met their requirements. Thanks to our consultative approach, they found it quick and easy to make changes to the plan, adding extra Velux windows and coming to a practical compromise on the roof, which they had wanted to slope the whole way. The next stage was the build itself. As an interior designer, Ellie has worked with many builders in a professional context and has experienced plenty of problems. Not so with Landmark’s build team, whom she described as amazing.
Commenting on the builders, Ellie told us that:
"They were really good, and it was snowing at the time so they made sure they kept [the house] wrapped up as much as possible, even though the back was off."
With the extension completed, the couple have added an exceptional open plan kitchen and dining area to their property. This enabled them to convert the original dining room into a living area as part of one enormous, bright and contemporary space for everyone to enjoy, including their newborn baby and their dog. This has also freed up space for them to turn the original kitchen into a utilities room and additional toilet.
Ellie says the extension has made a massive difference to their lives, and that they now practically live in their new space, which, with plenty of light and ventilation, is perfect for the summer. While the couple originally planned on selling the property, they are now less sure, as Ellie says she’s fallen in love with their new and improved home. Ellie told us that many visitors have been very impressed with their extension, and one of their friends has also chosen Landmark based on their recommendation.
Ellie praised our project managed service, saying:
“I’ve worked with so many builders that just make it so difficult with work, and it’s just a nightmare, but with Landmark it was easy, so we definitely would recommend them.”
