Find out about Loft Conversions

Updated planning regulations

On 10th September 2008 the government amended the planning rules on householder developments, making it easier to extend your home in many circumstances. These changes, as set out in ‘The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (Amendment) (No. 2) (England) Order 2008' come into force from 1st October 2008. In the majority of cases you will be allowed to convert your loft without the need to gain planning approval, even if your home has already been extended. You will be allowed to extend your loft area by up to forty cubic metres on most terraced or semi-detached properties, which should allow you to extend beyond the main loft area and over any existing pitched-roof rear addition. The new regulations do not apply if you live in a maisonette or a converted flat. We would be happy to advise you exactly how the new planning laws affect your proposed loft conversion: please contact us for further information.
