Rear dormer

A dormer is a timber structure, often hung in tile or slate, which usually protrudes from the rear roof slope. Dormers have the advantage of providing a large floor area, flooded with natural light, whilst achieving good head-height in the majority of the new room. Most of the construction work is conducted externally, using the scaffolding at the front and rear of your house, keeping the disruption caused to the rest of your home surprisingly minimal. This style of construction is often faster to build and can be less expensive than, for instance, a mansard. Planning permission is often not required if you do not have any existing extensions and meet certain other criteria. It is not always the best option to create a dormer, especially if your property is Victorian or if you have made use of your permitted development allowance in other extensions.
